Gastroenterology

Specialty Care Group’s gastroenterologists provide comprehensive care for residents’ digestive concerns. Your residents receive customized treatment, including regular exams and after-hours care, to identify and manage chronic and acute digestive concerns.

In Our Doctors’ Words

“Gastroenterology is incredibly important in a patient’s overall health, especially in the long-term care setting. As a gastroenterologist, I help patients with chronic, complex health problems through accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. I love what I do because I get to create strong relationships with patients, relieve their symptoms, and help them live  healthier lives.”

— Steven Guttmann, M.D., Gastroenterology & Internal Medicine Clinical Director, Specialty Care Group

What To Expect From Our Gastroenterology Services

Our gastroenterology team specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal system: the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus. We offer exams, preventive care, diagnosis, prescriptions, and treatment.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Steven Guttmann is our clinical director, with more than a decade of experience in his field. He leads our team of skilled practitioners, including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

Our team has experience treating a variety of gastroenterological (GI) conditions in clinical practice. They also have expertise in the specific needs of older patients, including those with multiple medical conditions and disabilities. Experienced gastroenterology providers can help deliver the most suitable care for patients in long-term care who may have trouble communicating their symptoms.

Specialty Care Group providers also complete ongoing training to stay at the forefront of their field and bring patients the latest treatments and best practices.

  • Your residents receive thorough care in the comfort and convenience of their own rooms or your facility’s procedure room. We bring the needed staff and equipment directly to their bedsides, so your staff can focus on other tasks.

Our team can handle many procedures at your facility, and we have a strong network for referrals when needed. When patients need more acute care, we make the transition as seamless as possible.

We can also consult our other specialists as necessary. For example, our gastroenterology team may refer patients to our dermatologist for skin concerns related to fecal incontinence.

  • Patients rarely experience health problems in isolation. That’s why we take a holistic approach to patient care, reviewing the full picture of each resident’s medical history and related conditions.

For example, patients being treated with multiple medications are more prone to gastrointestinal conditions. Our team creates a safe, appropriate treatment plan to manage symptoms, promote gastrointestinal health, and minimize other health risks.

  • With vulnerable residents in your care, a proactive approach is key. We work with your internal care team to detect, prevent, and treat health conditions before they progress.

Our partnership with your team continues even after we leave your building. We offer multiple resources to help your staff identify potential problems with a resident’s digestive system so everyone involved in patient care knows how to identify these potential problems.

  • Many long-term care residents are already taking multiple medications. We can often help avoid further prescription drugs by recommending nonmedical treatment options, such as dietary changes.

These options can be more cost-effective and less time-intensive for your staff, while being equally useful for treating the medical condition.

Gastroenterologic Conditions We Treat

Our highly skilled gastroenterologists diagnose and treat gastrointestinal conditions including:

  • Colitis (inflammation of the colon’s inner lining)

  • Constipation (tough or infrequent bowel movements)

  • Diarrhea (loose, frequent bowel movements)

  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD (when stomach acid or bile irritates the lining of the food pipe)

  • Internal bleeding (from ulcers, tears, or disease processes throughout the intestines)

  • Nutritional concerns

  • Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS (spastic colon)

We care for patients with multiple conditions, creating a customized treatment plan based on their individual needs. Our team is skilled at GI tube insertion and placement.

As patients age, their feeding issues and nutritional needs change. For these reasons, gastroenterology is one of the most consulted medical subspecialties. As an extension of your on-site team, we work closely with your medical staff to provide specialty care.
